Matthias Schneider
Laboratory technician
My job: Your go-to laboratory technician
As a a qualified electrical engineer my main job is to support the project engineers during their development work on so called hardware. To be precise, this includes the computer-aided design of wiring plans and electronic layouts, the building and testing of prototypes in the lab, and the assembly of single components and subassemblies.
Our laboratory workstations are specifically designed to suit our needs for producing, measuring, and testing the previously designed power electronics as well as sensing and control systems assemblies. Of course, we also need to make sure we document all steps and store information safely in our ERP system, our main data base for the administration of our products and processes.
Another important task is the management of tools and equipment: I am responsible for purchasing, storing, calibrating, and - if needed - reparing our laboratory equipment. I also take care of buying and storing electrical parts and components as well as auxiliaries such as adhesives, soldering agents, cleaning products, and many more.
Last but not least, I have voluntarily taken on a couple of administrative tasks. For example, as Health & Saftey Officer, I ensure hazardous material is properly stored, I regularly check mandatory safeguards and protective equipment, and I inform and instruct my colleagues about health & saftey regulations. All of the above mentioned measures help recognizing and removing potential risks, thus preventing accidents.
engineering. tomorrow. together is our slogan. "Together" means to me...
... protecting my colleagues and myself from all potential dangers to the best of my abilities. This is very important to me - not just from a personal point of view, but also because I am the Health & Safety Officer and I've been trained in first aid and in fire prevention. In a company like ours, after all, there is always a risk of something happening, as we work with high voltages and currents. A short circuit cannot be 100% precluded. Therefore, my personal motto is "stay safe".
My every day life: A little different each day
Whether it's design and development work, coordinating with my colleagues regarding different projects, my work as Health & Safety Officer, checking supplies and ordering new materials for the lab, receiving and checking delivered goods, or packing and sending parcels on their way - every day is different and brings new challenges. Not least the fact that I regularly participate in workers' council meetings makes my daily job life diverse and exciting.
My challenges: You've got to stay flexible
...because quite often I might just get a call from a colleague needing help, which normally means other ongoing tasks have to be stopped immediately. But this is what working here is really all about: We are a team, and we support each other. It's this kind of team spirit and my very interesting tasks that I find so fun and that motivate me again and again, each and every day.
